In 1953 she was converted to the latest Guppy IIA-class specification and re-entered service in 1953 with assignments in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Caribbean.&lt;br /&gt;USS&amp;nbsp;&lt;i&gt;Thornback&lt;/i&gt;&amp;nbsp;was transferred to the Turkish Navy on 2nd July 1971, and was immediately renamed TCG&amp;nbsp;&lt;i&gt;Uluçalireis&lt;/i&gt;&amp;nbsp;with pennant number S-338. She then gave thirty years of valuable service to the Republic of Turkey before being finally transferred to the care of the Rahmi M Koç Museum in 2001. Its original designation - U.S. ARMY&amp;nbsp;&lt;i&gt;ST-755&lt;/i&gt;&amp;nbsp;- is still visible at the bow. After the war,&amp;nbsp;&lt;i&gt;ST-755&lt;/i&gt;&amp;nbsp;was one of more than 100 surplus vessels donated to Greece, most of them 'Liberty' dry cargo vessels.&lt;br /&gt;The government in turn offered the merchant vessels to the Greek shipping community on generous financial terms to help restart activities after the wartime devastation of their fleet.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;ST-755&lt;/i&gt;&amp;nbsp;was acquired by the 'Nicolas E. Vernicos Shipping Co.' of Piraeus and renamed the&amp;nbsp;&lt;i&gt;Vernicos Irini&lt;/i&gt;. She provided more than 50 years of towage and salvage services, before being finally laid up in Salonika in 2000.&lt;br /&gt;In 2002, she was offered to the Rahmi M. Koç Museum by Nicolas A. Vernicos and after being towed to Turkey and undergoing cosmetic restoration at RMK Marine in Tuzla, went on display in October 2003. Seyahat sırasında Deniz adını verdiği bir kızı oldu. "Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter" olarak adlandırılan bu tekneler 20.yüzyılda dizaynerler tarafından geliştirilerek yelkenli açık deniz yatları olarak tasarlanmışlar ve bir çok unutulmaz seyahatleri tamamlamışlardır.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Ben de Amerikalı dizayner Y. Marie Tanton  ile görüşerek, bu tekneyi daha kısa bir omurga ve V biçimli bir karina ile daha da modernize etme düşüncemi kendisine açtım. Kendisi bu fikre çok olumlu baktı ve böyle bir projeyi seve seve tasarlayacağını bana bildirdi. Feth-i-Bulend was one of the more advanced, compact, and heavily-armed ironclads of its era. It was armed with four 229 millimeter (9 in) guns. It was powered by a single-screw compound engine, but could also run on sail if the weather was right. Çünkü yat 1992 yılından beri Güney Fransa’da ve Sardunya Adası açıklarında daha doğrusu İspanya’dan İtalya açıklarına kadar bulunduğu için orada deniz ve yatlarla ilgilenen herkes Savarona’yı tanıyor ve saygı gösteriyor. Bu çok önemli bir olay. Atatürk’ün manevi şahsiyetine ait bir gemi resmi ya da gayrı resmi kurumlarda özellikle yakınlık görmeli diye düşünüyoruz. Dünyada bu özelliklerde, böyle bir tarihi geçmişi ve maneviyatı olan başka bir yat yok. Bunu el üstünde tutup özel bir statü sağlayacaklarına bilhassa resmi işlerimizde her kademede bir baskıyla karşılaşıyoruz. En azından yardım görmüyoruz. Bu da bizi manevi olarak yaralıyor. Şu anda turizmin içinden gelen biri olarak iddia ediyorum ve her kademeyle de tartışmaya hazırım ki Savarona Türkiye’yi temsil eden en iyi üründür. Diğer işletmelere de haksızlık etmeyelim dersek ilk 5’tedir ama bana göre en tepededir. Böyle bir ürünün Türkiye turizminde olması bu fiyatlarla bu servisi vermesi bir şeref ve bir markadır. Türkiye’nin adına yaraşır bir üründür. Böyle devletten gelen bir ürünü sunma imkanı herkese nasip olmaz. Türkiye turizmine bu tür markalar ve ürünler gerekiyor. Yoksa şu anda Güney Bölgeleri’nde yapılan, 30-40 avroya odaları satılan oteller bizi bir yere taşımaz. Onlar da gerekli ama bu tür ürünler bizi bir yere taşımaz. Türkiye’ye dünya pazarında daha iyi tanınmamızı, imaj açısından daha iyi yerlere gelmemizi sağlayacak Savarona gibi ürünler gerekli. Bunların da korunması ve ilgi gösterilmesi lazım. Bu çok önemli bir olay. 1931 yılında yapılmış böyle bir geçmişi olan bir geminin korunması ve bakımı çok büyük paralara mal oluyor. Devletten de en ufak bir yardım alamıyoruz, herkes gibi % 18 KDV’mizi ödüyoruz. Onun dışında çektiğimiz sıkıntılarda bu işin manevi cabası. Ancak bu tamamen maneviyata dayanan bir iş. Savarona, Kahraman Bey’in denizciliğe ve Atatürk’e olan saygısından dolayı bu şirket içersinde korunuyor. Her ne kadar 131 metre boyunda, 6 katlı büyük bir gemi olsa da sonuçta deniz yolculuğu bir grup işidir. İnsanların birbirleriyle anlaşması ve kaynaşması çok önemlidir. O açıdan biz de mümkün olduğunca birbiriyle anlaşabilecek insanları kaynaştırmaya çalışıyoruz. Zaten misafirlerin çoğu grup olarak 3-4 oda kiralıyorlar. Çünkü Türk turizminin imajını yükseltecek ürünlere ve bunların korunmaya ihtiyacı var. Denizcilik dünyasında Savarona bir efsanedir. Denizcilikle uğraşan dünyadaki herkes bu tekneyi bilir. Bu niteliklerde üstelik Atatürk’ün de manevi şahsiyetinden dolayı bu kadar tarihi bir geçmişi olan başka bir ürün yok. Bu da bize pazarlama açısından bir avantaj sağlıyor ama manevi açıdan da çok büyük bir sorumluluk yüklüyor. Oraya gelen misafirlerin hiçbir şekilde rencide olmaması, en iyi servisi alması gerekiyor. Büyük önderin bu yarışları izlemeye gelmiş olması hiç kuşkusuz denizciler için de ayrı bir heyecan, şevk ve gurur kaynağı olurdu.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;span id="fullpost"&gt;&lt;div&gt;Atatürk; İran Şahı Rıza Pehlevi, İngiliz Kralı VIII. Edward ve Ürdün Kralı Abdullah’ı da Ertuğrul Yatında ağırlamıştır. 1938 yılında Kral VII. Edward İstanbul’u ziyaret ettiğinde bacadan dökülen kurum Majestelerinin beyaz pazenlerini kirletince, Atatürk Ertuğrul’un hurdaya gönderilmesine karar vererek yeni bir cumhurbaşkanlığı yatı araştırılması için emir vermiştir.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Başbakan Celal Bayar'ın çok yakın ahbapları olan Zeki Rıza Sporel ile Mahmut Baler, İstanbul'da Yun-Is'in temsilciliğini yapıyorlardı. Zeki Rıza Bey de, İngiliz Vitol ailesinin kızı ile evliydi. Eşinin kardeşleri de İngiliz Konsolosluğu'nda çalışıyorlardı.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Bu iki İngiliz'in, satılan yat’tan bahsederek Zeki Rıza Bey'i haberdar etmesi ve Rıza Beyin de, o sırada Atatürk için bir yat alınması girişiminde bulunan Celal Bayar'a durumu anlatması ile hükümet Savarona'nın satışından haberdar olmuştur. Araştırmalar sonucu İngiltere’nin Southampton limanında satışa çıkarılan eşsiz Savarona yatı Atatürk için uygun görülmüştür.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Bayan Cadwallader görüşmeler sonunda, takdir edip hayranı olduğu Atatürk’ün kullanabilmesi için gemiyi imalat değerinin çok altında ucuz bir fiyatla Türk hükümetine satmıştır. Ancak Alman tekniğinin bir harikası olan Savarona'yı elinden kaçırmak istemeyen Almanya, Krupp firmasının desteği ile Savarona Yatı'na haciz koyar. Fakat daha sonra, Atatürk'e karşı büyük sempatisi olan Amerika'nın o zamanki başkanı Roosvelt, Savarona Yatı'nın üzerindeki Almanya'nın koymuş olduğu hacizin en kısa zamanda kaldırılarak, Türkiye'ye satılmasını; aksi halde o sıralarda, New York Limanı'nda bulunan ünlü Alman transatlantiğinin haczedileceğini Hitler'e bildirir. Sonunda Almanya haczi kaldırarak, Savarona'nın Hamburg Limanı'ndan çıkmasına izin verir.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Bundan sonra Amerikan bandırası ile İngiltere'nin Sauthampton Limanı'na getirilen Savarona'ya, 24 Mart 1938 tarihinde Türk Bayrağı çekilerek, satın almak için gelen heyet üyelerine (Londra Büyükelçimiz Fethi Okyar, Cumhurbaşkanlığı Başkatibi Hasan Rıza Soyak, Hava Müsteşarı Sadullah Güney, İş Bankası Genel Müdürü Muammer Eriş, Etibank Genel Müdürü İlhami Nafiz Pamir) teslim edilir.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;12.04.1938 tarihinde her türlü hazırlığını yapmak üzere İngiltere'nin Southampton limanından tekrar Almanya'nın Hamburg Limanı'na gelen Savarona Yatı, bazı döşemeleri yenilendikten sonra 22.05.1938 tarihinde Gemi Süvarisi Sait Özege ve 45 kişilik personeli ile İstanbul'a hareket etti. Atatürk’ün ölümcül hasta olduğu sırada 01 Haziran 1938 Çarşamba günü saat 6.30'da Florya önlerinde demirleyen Savarona, aynı gün saat 12.30'da hareket ederek 13.45'de Dolmabahçe Sarayı'nın önünde demirlemiştir.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Atatürk aynı gün saat 15.30'da yanında Hasan Rıza Soyak, Salih Bozok, Kılıç Ali ve Yaver Celal olduğu halde, Acar motoru ile Savarona Yatı'na gelmiştir.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Atatürk evvelce planları görmüş ve yatı çok beğenmişti. Son zamanlarda giderek artan rahatsızlığı nedeniyle pek sevdiği bu yatta çoğu zamanını yatakta geçirdi. Bir gün şöyle dedi:&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;-Bir çocuk oyuncağını bekler gibi bu yatı beklemiştim. Mezarım mı olacak bu tekne benim?&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre; "&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Atatürk’ün Savarona’da geçirdiği altı hafta boyunca, kabine toplantıları düzenlendi, Romanya Kralı Carol da dahil olmak üzere önemli konuklar, devlet başkanları ağırlandı. Atatürk'ü ölüm yatağına Savanora'daki kamarasından bir koltuk içinde ancak götürebildiler. Yat Dolmabahçe Sarayı önünde boynunu bükerek Atatürk'ü boşuna bekledi. Atatürk, 10 Kasım 1938’de Dolmabahçe sarayında öldü.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’ün aziz naaşı, 19 Kasım günü, İstanbul’dan İzmit’e Türk ve yabancı Harp gemilerinden oluşan bir donanma refakatinde götürüldü. Denizde cenaze törenine katılan, Yavuz muharebe kruvazörü, Zafer, Tınaztepe muhripleri, Dumlupınar, Gür denizaltı gemileri, Doğan, Martı hücumbotları yanında, Savarona yatı da törene katılarak korteje İzmit’e kadar eşlik etti.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Savarona yatı Atatürk’ün ölümünden sonra, Ulaştırma Bakanlığının, 3.8.1939 tarih, 1650/2115 sayılı emirleriyle hazine namına İstanbul limanı gemi sicil defterine 2051 sicil numarasıyla tescil edildi.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Yat Cumhurbaşkanı İsmet İnönü döneminde de Cumhurbaşkanlığı yatı olarak korundu.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Kanlıca koyunda uzun süre hareketsiz yatan Savarona yatının 1951 yılında donanmaya devredilerek, okul gemisi olarak kullanılmasına karar verildi. Gemi kısa bir süre İstinye’de havuza alındı, daha sonra da Haliç’te havuza alınarak, gerekli bakımı, tamir ve tadilatı yapıldı. Bu arada baş ve kıç kısmına ikişer adet top yerleştirildi. Gemi, bir müddet Haliç’te, Kasımpaşa’daki tarihi divanhane binasının önünde demirli kaldı. 2 Temmuz 1951 tarihinde Savarona yatı Deniz Kuvvetleri Komutanına devredilerek okul gemisi olarak kullanılmaya başlandı. 70 gün süren ilk inceleme ve tatbikat gezisini, 65 öğrenciyle 1 Ekim 1951-8 Aralık 1951 tarihleri arasında, Hindistan’ın Bombay şehrine yaptı. Gemi komutanı, Dz. Alb. Vedat Burak komutasında, İstanbul’dan hareketle, Mısır’ın İskenderiye limanını 3 gün ziyaret ettikten sonra, Süveyş kanalını geçerek, Suudi Arabistan’da Cidde’de, daha sonra Aden’de 3 gün, Pakistan’ın Karaçi limanında 5 gün kaldıktan sonra Bombay’a vardı. Dönüşte İskenderun, Antalya ve İzmir’e uğrayarak İstanbul’a demirledi.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Bu uzun gezisinde Savarona okul gemisi şanlı Türk bayrağını uğradığı ülkelerin sularında dalgalandırmış, bu ülkelerle aramızda kardeşlik, dostluk bağlarını kuvvetlendirmiştir.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Savaronada, uzun süre Atatürk’ün kullanmış olduğu özel daire eşyalarıyla birlikte müze olarak muhafaza edildi.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre; "&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Savarona yatı, Heybeli ada açıklarında 3 ekim 1979 sabahı çıkan yangın sonucu ağır bir şekilde hasar gördü.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Gölcük tersanesinde 6 ay içinde onarılan gemi, bir müddet daha okul gemisi olarak hizmete devam ettikten sonra kadro dışı bırakıldı. Savarona okul gemisinin yangından kurtarılabilen bir kısım eşyası 1986 yılında, teşhir edilmek üzere İstanbul Deniz Müzesi’ne devredildi. Atatürk’ün Savarona yatında kalmış olduğu 54 gün süresince kullandığı karyola, komodin ve komple yatak takımları da Deniz Müzesinde, müzenin Atatürk salonunda teşhir edilmektedir.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;1989 yılında Savarona’yı hurdaya çıkarma kararı alındı; ancak Kahraman Sadıkoğlu son dakika kararıyla yatı 49 yıllığına kiraladı ve Savarona’yı önceki görkeminden daha iyi bir hale kavuşturmak için çok çaba isteyen yeniden döşeme işine başladı. İçi Donald Starkey tarafından tasarlanan yatı yenilemek için 425 işçi yaklaşık üç yıl çalıştı. Toplam restorasyon bedeli yaklaşık 25 milyon dolar kadardır.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Savarona’nın içinde Atatürk’ün kütüphanesi ve yatak odasıyla birlikte 19 suit bulunuyor. Süper lüks döşenen suitlerin bazılarının genişliği 50 metrekareye ulaşıyor. Savarona’nın içinde bulunan Türk Hamamında kullanılan Mermerlerin ağırlığı ise 260 ton dur.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Yatın en geniş salonu başta bulunup ve burası aynı zamanda yemek salonu görevi de görmektedir. Salonda gerçek XV. Lui'ye ait yemek masası ve 12 iskemlesi vardı. Köşede gayet güzel bir şömine ve karşısında antika bir komodin ile siyah orjinal bir etejer bulunuyordu. Hemen bitişiğinde Atatürk'ün kısa bir süre için çalışma odası olarak kullandığı, çok şık ve çok güzel döşenmiş bir bölüm vardı, içinde de yaklaşık 1500 kitaptan oluşan bir kütüphanesi vardı. She was the largest in the world when launched in 1931, and remains with a length of 124 m (408 ft) one of the world’s longest. She is owned by the Republic of Turkey and is currently leased by Turkish businessman Kahraman Sadıkoğlu from the Turkish State.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Named for an African swan living in the Indian Ocean, the ship was designed by Gibbs &amp;amp; Cox in 1931 for American heiress Emily Roebling Cadwallader, granddaughter of John A. Roebling, engineer of the Brooklyn Bridge. The ship was built by Blohm &amp;amp; Voss in Hamburg, Germany. She cost about $4 million ($53 million in 2006 dollars).[1]&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;In 1938, the Turkish government bought the yacht for ailing leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who spent only six weeks aboard before dying a few months later.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Throughout World War II, the ship lay idle in Kanlıca Bay on the Bosporus. In 1951, she was converted to the training ship Güneş Dil (English: Sun Language). In October 1979, the ship was gutted by fire at the Turkish Naval Academy off Heybeliada Island in the Sea of Marmara.
